Pilot Testing, touch-ups and a GIF

15/8/17

Sticker added to prototype to differentiate General Waste compartment from Cans compartment:

Pilot testing done to test prototype (video will be added later!)

GIF made to show how the prototype works!

The Third Prototype

13/8/17

Prototype construction completed early:
Frame covered up with corrugated boards (last pic)

Sketch of Third Prototype

10/8/17
Rough sketch of the third prototype submitted to Mr. Lam, construction will be complete in about 5 days.

Semi Finals Feedback

13/7/17

Feedback received for prototype:
Maybe make it out of recycled metal http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SetAMookToKillAMook
Put one somewhere in the school
Safety precautions
Ensure success rate -> We need to go pump iron

Slide feedback from Mentor

12/7/17
Presented our slides to our mentor

Comments:

More practice needed: presentation too long
Prototype looked too dirty
Words on slides needed to be bigger

Follow up:
Slides were edited, prototype was wrapped in green tape:

The Second Prototype

4/7/17
 The Second Prototype

Can fits in through right chute
Slips into crushing chamber, when crushed it will fall through the gap

The First Prototype

29/6/17
First prototype completed

Weight slams down vertically on can to crush it

Issues: Can needs to be put in and afterwards manually removed

Meeting the CEO + Engineer

15/6/17

Had discussion with former CEO of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city, Mr Goh Chye Boon

26/6/17
Met up with an engineer who agreed to help us in the instruction of our prototype
He had a different idea from us:

He wanted to crush the can vertically: No need for counterbalance + gravity works with the crushing force

He explained that the construction process was too dangerous for us to help with
We visited him every day after school to check on the construction and discuss the design with him

3D Model for consideration + more sketches

20/4/17

Created 3D model of the foot of the invention, a manual trapdoor and leg stands, with hooks to hang plastic bags

Sketches that have more detail of the mechanism (still a bit messy)

Online Meeting

15/4/17

Held an online meeting to discuss the prototype

- Narrowed scope to just cans instead of general trash (too general = compromising effectiveness?)
- First sketches of prototype:

Horizontal crushing mechanism operated by lever suggested in Prelims
Consider:
Trapdoor to manually pull out after can is crushed?
Material: 3-D Printed?

Preliminary Rounds: Feedback

5/4/17

Is the problem a lack of trash compactors, or is it an attitude issue
- Perhaps make the prototype more efficient to use
- Public education? (on packaging of product)
- Survey, more data gathering
- Check for more existing products: Home trash compactors

First prototype: Mechanism

Basic Industries International 77703 Multi Crush Aluminum Can Crusher

The mechanism is simple and effective, so it could easily be used in the prototype.

Second Draft of the Prototype II

24/3/17

Sketch of prototype drawn by Jedrick:

Prototype is a can crusher

Features:

Second Draft of the Prototype I

22/3/17

Prototype features:

  • Functions as both trash can and compactor.
  • Trash compactor unit that operates on a (    ) mechanism.
  • Frame underneath the unit with twin hooks, can hold plastic bags.
  • Sliding panel to separate crushed trash from uncrushed trash.

Tuesday 14 February 2017

1st Draft of the Prototype

15/2/17

The prototype will be a trash can that stands on stilts, under which will have a plastic bag hanging from.

Inside the trash can is the compactor, and the foot of the trash can will be a flap/door to allow the compacted trash to slide out into the plastic bag after compaction.

Prototype will be 3-D printed.

Idea Finalization

8/2/17

1st idea shut down: Nothing to do with kelp except consumption of it or conversion into other consumable products.

3rd idea shut down: Invention already exists

2nd idea is a possibility: Current trash compactors are not portable, inefficient, expensive.

1st Idea Concept

1/2/17

IVP Theme: Building towards a sustainable environment

1st idea: Do something about the kelp in reservoirs and rivers

2nd idea: Trash compactor to reduce amount of plastic bags needed to contain trash

3rd idea: A pipe cleaner of sorts to clean the inside of plastic drink bottles so they can be reused
